Review Spy x Family

Spy x Family is a hilarious and heartwarming anime series that follows the adventures of a fake family composed of a spy, an assassin, a telepath, and a dog. The anime is based on the manga series of the same name by Tatsuya Endo, which has been serialized on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ app and website since March 2019. The anime adaptation is produced by Wit Studio and CloverWorks, and premiered on TV Tokyo and its affiliate stations in April 2022. The second season is currently airing, and an anime film, titled Spy x Family Code: White, is scheduled to be released in December 2023.

The story is set in a fictional world where two rival nations, Westalis and Ostania, are locked in a cold war. Loid Forger, whose real name is Twilight, is a master spy from Westalis who is assigned to infiltrate Ostania and prevent a war from breaking out. His mission, codenamed Operation Strix, requires him to enroll a child in the prestigious Eden Academy and get close to Donovan Desmond, the leader of a warmonger political party. To create a convincing cover, he adopts a young orphan girl named Anya, who turns out to be a mind reader, and marries a woman named Yor Briar, who is actually a professional assassin. Later, they also adopt a dog named Bond, who has the ability to see the future. The four of them form the Forger family, and try to live a normal life while hiding their secrets from each other and the world.

The main characters of the anime are:

• Loid Forger/Twilight: A skilled and dedicated spy who can disguise himself as anyone and handle any situation. He is loyal to his country and his mission, but he also develops genuine feelings for his fake family. He often struggles to balance his work and his family life, and sometimes acts awkwardly or comically due to his lack of common sense or experience in social situations. He is voiced by Takuya Eguchi in Japanese and Alex Organ in English.

• Yor Forger: A beautiful and kind woman who works as a florist by day and a deadly assassin by night. She is loyal to her brother Yuri, who is also an assassin, and her clients, but she also cares deeply for her fake husband and daughter. She is often oblivious to the danger or the absurdity of the situations she faces and sometimes acts violently or impulsively due to her assassin instincts. She is voiced by Kana Hanazawa in Japanese and Monica Rial in English.

• Anya Forger: A cute and cheerful girl who was experimented on as a child and gained the power to read minds. She is loyal to her fake parents, whom she loves dearly, and her dog, whom she considers her best friend. She is often curious, mischievous and sometimes uses her power to help or hinder her family’s plans. She is voiced by Ayaka Asai in Japanese and Sarah Wiedenheft in English.

• Bond Forger: A White dog who was also experimented on and gained the power to see the future. He is loyal to his fake family, especially Anya, whom he communicates with telepathically. He is often calm, wise and sometimes uses his power to warn or guide his family’s actions. He is voiced by Junichi Suwabe in Japanese and Ian Sinclair in English.

The anime also features a large cast of supporting characters, such as Loid’s handler Sylvia, Yor’s brother Yuri, Anya’s classmates Damian and Becky, and Loid’s target Donovan, among others. Each character has their own personality, backstory, and role in the plot, and they often interact with the main characters in humorous or dramatic ways.

The anime is a perfect blend of action, comedy, and spy fiction, with a touch of romance and family drama. The animation is fluid and colorful, the music is catchy and fitting, and the voice acting is superb and expressive. The anime follows the manga closely, but also adds some original scenes and details that enhance the story and the characters. The anime also balances the serious and the funny moments, and never loses sight of the main theme of the series: the importance of family, even if it is a fake one.

Spy x Family is an anime that will make you laugh, cry, and cheer for the Forger family and their crazy adventures. It is an anime that will appeal to fans of spy stories, comedy, action, and romance. It is an anime that will warm your heart and make you appreciate your own family, even if they are not spies, assassins, telepaths, or dogs. It is an anime that you should definitely watch, and I highly recommend it.
